– We wanted to find a straightforward and lightweight operating model for the service that benefits both the customer and us. When the monitoring of packaging quantities takes place in the customer’s existing pallet locations, it serves the customer most agilely without massive special arrangements.

– Through experience, we have observed that rush orders burden both the customer and the service provider. When it is identified that a certain packaging type is consistently in demand, it is profitable and critically important from a production perspective to produce packages continuously to ensure they never run out, Heidi continues.
The service was tested with a customer. During the pilot phase, measurement errors were identified, but by addressing them, the service became reliable. Valuable feedback and experiences were gathered from the customer. The supplementary service was perceived to significantly streamline the production and delivery reliability of wooden packaging.
– That the service appears to the customer as reliability and delivery reliability is one side of the service. In addition, it also facilitates our own operations because we don’t receive unexpected rush orders that burden both the customer and us. With the service, we see the customer’s inventory situation, allowing us to anticipate the production of products. This has a positive impact on our production, Heidi summarizes the benefits of the service.
Replenishment service eliminates steps and brings delivery reliability
The automatic replenishment service for wooden packaging is suitable for companies that regularly and continuously use standardized packaging in their production.
– Standardized packaging that the customer company needs for its production on a regular basis is crucial. In such situations, we can offer an automated service that saves the customer a lot of time and effort. They don’t have to monitor and place orders. We remove a step for the customer by offering the replenishment service. We monitor, produce and deliver right amount of packages right on time, says Heidi Haverinen.
HUB logistics’ Development Director, Anssi Tura, who was involved in the project, supports the service both in terms of costs and promises of service to customer companies. Both customers and their customers are in a hurry to get the products.
– If you start thinking about how much it costs when transport packaging runs out, and the products don’t go on schedule, for example, for long international transports, the sums can unexpectedly climb quite high. In many companies, all components are ordered as needed, but packaging is rarely counted as components, so ordering them is memory-dependent. Therefore, the ordering process can be very shaky in some places. Our replenishment service significantly reduces this risk.
Easy of customer-specific designed service surprises
The monthly priced service is always designed specifically for the customer. At the beginning of the service, the packaging needs of the customer are discussed, and alarm limits are set based on which refills are performed.
According to Business Director Janne Marttila, the service is offered in all HUB locations that produce wooden packaging. Marttila states that the service is convenient and customer-specifically tailored.
– A lot happens internally behind the scenes, but for the customer, it appears as an easy service. At the beginning, we go through the customer’s needs together and create a service package. In its simplest form, the customer informs us what products, how much, and how often, and we take care of the rest. The ease of the service pleasantly surprises our customers.
This is how replenishment service works:
- A measurement sensor is placed above the wooden packaging stack.
- The sensor is ready to use immediately and does not require an internet connection or power supply to operate.
- The sensor sends us information about the quantity of packaging in stock. The number of monitored packaging types and sensors can be flexibly changed as needed.
- We monitor the quantity of wooden packaging in real-time. We receive a notification when the quantity of packaging drops below the alarm limit, and we start producing more packaging.
- The ready-made packages are delivered to the customer at the right time to the right place.
Removing repeated work steps through intelligence
Our Development Director Anssi set out to map an IoT solution that allows us to offer intelligent logistics in wooden packaging services in an entirely new way. According to Tura, current technology enables a nimble automated supplementary service.

– The IoT sensor sends data to the system at regular intervals, which we utilize. We tested the service with a pilot customer, and no major challenges were encountered during testing. The measuring device works quite well and reliably in this type of service.”
Various technological solutions and robotics are already well-utilized in the logistics industry. According to Tura, the concept of intelligent logistics is HUB’s absolute strength. The new service is a unique package that allows repetitive work steps to be removed from the customer’s operations.
