HUB logistics planned layout and processes to Sulzer’s new logistics center

HUB logistics planned Sulzer's new logistics center

Sulzer Pumps Finland Oy launched an investment project in the spring of 2021, which will renew the assembly, test run and painting functions of the process pumps manufactured at the Kotka factory. With the project, Sulzer introduced an automated and digitalized production line and a logistics center in Kotka. HUB logistics was responsible for the spatial and process planning of the new logistics center.

The new 5,500m2 logistics center enables more efficient handling of components and their timely distribution to production. HUB logistics was responsible for planning the logistics center’s processes and material flows, defining work methods and techniques, and implementing the operations of the logistics center. The internal logistics service was designed to meet the needs of renewed production lines.

In the logistics center, internal logistics operates with industry-leading automation and modern work tools

HUB logistics invested in the logistics center’s modern equipment base. The automated logistics center makes the factory’s material operations more efficient and also shortens lead times.

Operational efficiency is brought by the logistics center’s new warehouse automation, which is designed for small goods. Four storage machines are in use, which adapt to the storage needs depending on the size of the goods to be stored. Automation offers a total of 9,600 storage spaces.

Two trains operate between the logistics center and the Sulzer factory, which deliver the supplies needed for the factory’s production in sets by wagon delivery.

The logistics center’s narrow aisle warehouse is the best solution in terms of operational activities. It saves floor space and brings efficiency to storage. The narrow-aisle warehouse is operated with two new narrow-aisle combi trucks.

Internal logistics functions will be centralized in the new logistics center

With the investment project, the internal logistics functions of Sulzer’s Kotka factory were transferred to HUB logistics Packaging Oy. The functions of internal logistics will be centralized in the newly introduced logistics center. Joni Sundelin, CEO of HUB logistics, emphasizes the importance of the investment project and the logistics center project:

– Being involved in the investment project is significant for us in many ways. We got to show our expertise and design spaces that are functionally modern and meet the customer’s needs. We invested in modern equipment and updated our service concept with Sulzer to a new level. We offer high-quality processes created through good cooperation and competent staff, allowing Sulzer to focus purely on its own core business.

HUB logistics business director Janne Marttila is very satisfied with the cooperation:

– The partnership that started in 2013 has deepened and developed over the years. It was very great to be involved in this project and to be able to design the logistics center and its functionalities from the very beginning of the project. Active and close cooperation with Sulzer has produced a functioning logistics center both in terms of processes and automation.
