HUB logistics’ sustainability report for the year 2023 has been completed and published. The report outlines the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals that HUB promotes and how HUB logistics as a company takes responsibility for its operations in various areas of sustainability. The report provides insight into key figures and metrics related to HUB logistics’ sustainability efforts.

Joni Sundelin, CEO of HUB logistics group, emphasizes the significance of sustainability across all aspects of the company:

– Sustainability is becoming increasingly important across all facets of responsibility, whether it’s economic, social, or environmental. Sustainability requires commitment and should be evident in daily choices, from procurement and material selection to emissions reduction. In the completed report, we detail our sustainability program and provide examples of our sustainability efforts.

Highlights of sustainability work in 2023

HUB logistics made carbon footprint calculations for the second year. The scope 3 emissions sources according to the GHG Protocol are reported more comprehensively for purchased services and production goods compared to the calculations conducted in 2022.

In 2023, the total emissions were 2510.2 tCO2, compared to 1970.4 tCO2 in 2022. The majority of emissions are caused by Scope 3 emissions, accounting for 81% of the total emissions. One reason for the increase in emissions is the broader emission calculation compared to previous years. Within Scope 3, subcontracted services such as ICT services, freight services, and occupational health are now included in the calculation.

Efforts are made to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, for example, through procurement by selecting environmentally friendly products and making sustainable business-supporting purchases. High-quality and sustainable equipment acquisitions play a key role in promoting sustainable and cleaner logistics. In 2023, HUB invested in forklift automation, allowing some of the straightforward operations at the Vantaa logistics center to be transferred to automation. The procurement was a strategic investment towards more sustainable and efficient logistics.

The amount of renewable diesel and renewable light fuel oil has been increased within the group during 2023. For example, renewable light fuel oil was purchased for a total of 17,224 liters for the Kotka site, resulting in a reduction of 39.4 tCO2 emissions.  Amount of renewable fuels will gradually be increased at the production sites annually.

Emissions are also reduced by continuously improving the energy efficiency of buildings. The total electricity consumption of the Vantaa logistics center was 746.2 MWh/year, out of which 130 MWh/year was produced with solar energy. The amount of electricity produced with solar energy corresponded to 17.4% of the total consumption of the logistics center. The electricity purchased for our own premises is 100% carbon dioxide-free.

As part of our sustainability efforts, an internal flea market was launched to support internal circular economy. Employees are encouraged to use the new channel to recycle usable machines and equipment internally.

Investment in supervisor training was made by organizing a six-month supervisor training program, which received positive feedback from participants. Information about offered summer jobs and internships is collected more widely from various locations.

A record number of safety observations were made. However, there is room for improvement in key accident indicators. The 5S method has been effectively utilized, and the average of conducted audits has remained at a good level. Safety and 5S key figures can be found in the social responsibility section of the report.

The sustainability program forms the basis for sustainability work

In 2023, HUB logistics made significant strides in sustainability work. The company  implemented a comprehensive sustainability program, integrating sustainability into its corporate strategy. The program outlines themes under which planned goals and actions are directed.

– The development and implementation of the sustainability program are part of our long-term sustainability efforts for a more sustainable and greener logistics. Discussions with our employees about the strategic focus areas by location have undoubtedly promoted understanding of sustainability themes within our organization. Sustainability is part of our corporate culture, where we value each other, develop our skills, and prioritize workplace safety, comments CEO Joni Sundelin.

According to Sundelin, the first phase of sustainability work is complete, and the measures to achieve the set goals have been defined.

– Sustainability work is ongoing, and our goals and measures will evolve and change as our work progresses. I firmly believe that our sustainability program guides us to make sustainable and responsible choices every day, Sundelin concludes.
